As you can hopefully infer from the previous sentence, my DJ partner Steve Tacos and I were successful in acquiring a show this semester. Unfortunately it came at great cost.
Upon attending the mandatory "big meeting" for WSPN Skidmore radio, it was mentioned for the umpteenth time that opting for a formatted show greatly increased one's chances of getting a time slot. This chance for success could be bolstered to even greater heights through the use of a creative, unique, and original theme to govern ones format and the content within. It's the same spiel they give every semester, but as they intentionally wait until the end of the meeting to distribute applications, Steve and I had no choice but to sit through it.
As soon as the meeting ended, we snagged a copy and took off. Having temporarily forgotten about the format of our previous show, we began brainstorming anew. DJ Tacos suggested jokingly that the format for our show be GWAR, a metal band who claim to be aliens from outer space (shown below).
They're kinda scary, and ridiculous, and neither Steve nor I even listen to them,
so it made them the perfect basis for our radio show
While I knew he was joking, I couldn't help but think it was a good idea (it wasn't). The format rapidly transformed into one that included any musical artist that performed in some sort of disguise, may it be a mask, face paint, make-up, a costume, etc. We were mostly amused by the ridiculousness of the theme, as well as how many bands we could actually find who did this (more than I thought). So we said what the hell and went for it.
So now for the point of this entire post.--This morning was our first show, it was from 6-7am (Tuesday morning), and will be there every week from now until forever (so if for some strange reason you're up, please feel free to take a listen). The only reason I said anything about this was to point out how ridiculous our show is at that hour, and to question the radio programmer's decisions.
If for starters we ignore the fact that for the hour before us the station is playing smooth jazz, and the hour after it's playing classical, you are left with 1 hour of masked bands performing while you drowsily get ready for work. Yes this seems fine, but when you realize that normal bands don't perform behind masks and in costumes, you are left with an eclectic mix of metal, hair rock, dub-step, house, and the occasional electronica, or eccentric normal band.
In other words from 4 till 6 and then again from 7 till 8 you will be coddled, but for a brief hour in the middle, your radio will yell directly into your ears courtesy of me.
Please note that that is the exact opposite of how I wish to spend my morning, but they approved that format and those bands for that time slot! I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do, but I do know that Folktronica would have killed it, and it might just have to make an unexpected return!
